# roark tool update

> Update a tool

Replaces the tool: its name, scope, inputs, description, grading hints and runtime. A field left out is cleared, so omitting agentId makes the tool project-wide. A change declares a new version; agent versions pinned to an older one keep it.

```bash Synopsis theme={"theme":{"light":"everforest-light","dark":"everforest-dark"}}
roark tool update <tool-id> [options]
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> Calls `PUT /v1/tool/{toolId}`

## Arguments

**tool-id** `string` *required*

The tool-id.

## Options

**--name** `string` *required*

**--description** `string` *required*

When the agent should use the tool.

**--agent-id** `string`

**--inputs** `array`

**--invocation-criteria** `string`

**--expected-result** `string`

roark tool update <tool-id> --name <value> --description <value> --runtime.request <value>
```
Every command also takes the [global options](https://docs.roark.ai/cli-reference/overview.md#global-options) and sets one
of the [exit codes](https://docs.roark.ai/cli-reference/overview.md#exit-codes).
